Boardroom Newsbrief – December 11, 2018

Presentation to Director of Education Jennifer Adams

Chair of the Board, Lynn Scott took the opportunity to express her gratitude on behalf of the Board to out-going Director of Education – Dr. Jennifer Adams.

Jennifer came to the OCDSB from Lakehead Public Schools in September, 2005.  Her dedication to French Immersion and school improvement planning followed her to the OCDSB.  Chair Scott said Ms. Adams - she made a lasting, positive impression on the lives of students, staff and Trustees.

Presentation by Mostafizur Khan, Chair of the Parent Involvement Committee

Mr. Khan offered his thanks to Director of Education, Jennifer Adams for her leadership, vision and ability to work with others. He told those in attendance he was honoured, humbled and privileged to collaborate with Director Adams. He commended her vision in developing the District’s Exit Outcomes.  He also reminded her – she will never be forgotten.

Presentation by Student Trustees

Student Trustees, Samantha Lin and Isaac Glassman presented  Director of Education Jennifer Adams with a signature book signed by hundreds of high school students throughout the District.  Director Adams described the book as one of the greatest gifts she has received in her career.

Student Trustee Report

Student Trustees, Samantha Lin and Isaac Glassman presented their Student Trustee Report to the newly elected Board of Trustees at the December 11, 2018 Board Meeting. They highlighted their on-going efforts related to Student Senate and Student Presidents’ Council. They also updated the provincial advocacy work underway by the Ontario Student Trustees’ l’Ontario, (OSTA-AECO).

Public Motions

Report 18-121, Appointment of Community Representatives to the Special Education Advisory Committee

Trustees voted that in the event there is a vacancy of a Community Representative to the Special Education Advisory Committee before November 30, 2020, the Selection Committee shall first contact Amy Wellings to confirm her interest in filling the vacancy.

Report 18-126 OCDSB Draft Response to Ministry Consultation on Education in Ontario 

Trustees approved the draft response to the December 2018 Ministry Consultation for submission to the Ministry of Education.

Indigenous Education Advisory Council (IEAC) Report - November 15, 2018

Trustees received the Indigenous Advisory Committee Report. One of the key issues discussed at the Advisory Council Committee was establishing IEAC membership.  It has been determined  IEAC will decide on the process for electing members. Several people have already expressed interest in being members of the Council. IEAC will have a minimum of six meetings per year.  IEAC will include:

  • Three members representing Elders, Senators, and Traditional Knowledge Keepers;
  • Two members representing the First Nations community (inclusive of one member from the Algonquin Nation);
  • Two members of the Inuit community;
  • Two members of the Métis community;
  • One trustee representative;
  • One Indigenous education lead ;
  • One Superintendent;
  • At least two and not more than three student representatives; and
  • A maximum of two OCDSB staff members.
Report, Audit Committee, November 19, 2018

Trustees approved the November 19, 2018 Report from the Audit Committee.  

Highlights include:

  • The 2017-2018 consolidated financial statements;
  • The upgrading of the of the K212 Finance System and;
  • The long range agenda.

Report, Parent Involvement Committee, November 2018

Trustees received the Report from the Parent Involvement Committee dated November 21, 2018.  Mostafizur Khan was re-elected Chair and Carm Janneteau was acclaimed Vice-Chair.

Report, Advisory Committee on Equity, November 29, 2018

Trustees received the Report from the Advisory Committee on Equity. The report dealt with a variety of issues ranging from a District Equity Update to the establishment of an ACE Membership-Subcommittee.
