Program Overview
Our General Learning Program is 1 of 3 secondary GLP sites in the Ottawa Carleton District School Board. We have 6 classes here at Sir Guy with 16 students per class. All of our classes are staffed with a Special Education Teacher and an Educational Assistant. Students are placed in our program by a Central Board Committee based on applications made by the current school.
Students work on goals and expectations from their IEPs and receive an Alternative Report Card which is directly linked to the IEP. Our students graduate with a Certificate of Accomplishment. Students in the GLP are not working towards an Ontario Secondary School Diploma as they do not receive Ministry of Education credits in this program.
The focus of the program is to maximize the learning potential of our students while focusing on basic and practical numeracy and literacy skills. We have a strong focus on the development of social, work and life skills.

Key Teams
Each student is linked with a GLP teacher and educational assistant who track progress, provide support as required, are the primary contact with parent/guardian, assist with transition planning and are responsible for IEPs, IPRCs, documentation, etc.
Curriculum
Our GLP students take the following courses: World of Work, English, Math, Personal Life Skills, Physical Education, Exploring My World, and the senior students participate in Co-operative Education.
Integration
All of our GLP students are a part of the school community here at Sir Guy Carleton. They participate in school clubs, sports and activities. In terms of integration into the vocational program classes, we are significantly limited by space availability, because Sir Guy is not provided staffing for GLP students to take vocational classes. If possible and suitable, some of our students, in their senior years, are integrated into a single vocational program course. Key indictors for integration suitability include academic/subject ability and chances for success, independence skills, attendance, behaviour (maturity and social skills) along with student interest and motivation.
Work Experience
After their first year here at Sir Guy, GLP students participate in Work Experience Placements. For two weeks at the end of January and another two weeks at the end of June, students have an opportunity to gain real life experience in a work environment. Placements are based interest and ability.
Supporting Your Student
All families should regularly review our Connecting with Agencies guide. It provides a timeline for accessing services starting upon entry to Secondary School. Transition planning starts now! If you have questions, need copies of documents or require support, please connect with your student's key teacher.

Program Placement
Placement in the General Learning Program is done by central board committee. A student’s OCDSB school completes a System Class Referral based on a recommendation from the school multidisciplinary team. For more information about GLP referrals or placements, please contact Liane Wray, Learning Support Consultant, at 613-596-8211, ext 8976 or liane.wray@ocdsb.ca.
